The Sheboygan County Meat Animal Sale showcases quality livestock raised by Sheboygan County Youth. Along with raising quality livestock these youth have also gained the following life skills:
The goal of the Sheboygan County Meat Animal Sale Committee is to provide a vehicle to support the youth exhibitors as they continue to build life skills and become positive influences within our communities.
Over the past year, 4-H and FFA members have attended no less than three educational meetings, events, online learnings, shows and/or value-added experiences that contributed to the success of their agriculture product. But more importantly, the purpose of the educational meetings and the sale is to mark personal growth and help youth “build life skills”- Trustworthiness, Leadership, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
THE PROGRAM:
The finest beef, sheep, and swine from Sheboygan County’s 4-H and FFA project work will be sold to the highest bidder. Bids will be accepted by ring men or over the phone for prearranged bidders based on a price per pound. The Champions and Reserve Champions will sell first followed by the remaining animals in random order.
Participation in the Meat Animal Sale is for youth 3rd grade through one year after high school. Youth must be enrolled in a Sheboygan County 4-H Club or FFA Chapter prior to March 1. During the project year, youth are required to attend a minimum of three (3) county wide Meat Animal Sale approved activities to be eligible for the sale, included a Quality Assurance Training. Only animals exhibited at the Sheboygan County Fair will be sold in the sale.
Proceeds from the sale of each animal will go directly to the youth exhibitor to further his or her educational or agricultural pursuits. The sale committee retains a small percentage to cover the cost of conducting the sale. Proceeds from animals donated back to the sale that are resold in the Second Chance Auction go directly to the Sheboygan County Meat Animal Sale Scholarship/Education Fund.
THE SECOND CHANCE AUCTION Est. 1998
Successful buyers can donate animals back to be resold at the end of the auction. This is an excellent option if you would like to support the youth but may not need the meat. The animal is resold at the end of the auction with the funds of the sale going to the Scholarship/Educational Fund. The individual who purchases the animal in the Second Chance Auction is purchasing the animal and receives the meat.
SHEBOYGAN COUNTY FOOD BANK DONATION:
The Meat Animal Sale Committee has teamed up with the Sheboygan County Food Bank to allow buyers to donate their animal to the Sheboygan County Food Bank to help Sheboygan County families in need.
YOUTH LIVESTOCK PROJECT GRANT:
The Sheboygan County Meat Animal Sale offers youth in the livestock project grant money for livestock project member to assist them in developing their youth projects in 4-H and FFA. The goal of the program is to encourage youth to become involved in the livestock industry and assist them with furthering their projects with monetary assistance. The grant program recognizes youth who are sincerely interested in improving their projects through past experiences and new opportunities. The money awarded can be used towards registration fees, and related expenses for educational conferences or workshops, project animal purchases, equipment purchases, feed and veterinary expenses and any other costs associated with improving an individual’s livestock project.
Funding for the Grants comes from the animals sold in the Meat Animal Sale Resale. Applicants completed an application form and completed an interview to discuss their project goals and intent with the funds. The interview is a great way for youth to talk through their project goals and educate others on their project.
YOUTH LIVESTOCK SCHOLARSHIPS:
Each year up to five outstanding individuals who exhibit livestock (beef, sheep, swine) and are pursuing higher education are awarded Scholarships through the Meat Animal Sale. The recipients are chosen based on exhibited traits of responsibility, hard work and involvement in their 4-H and or FFA livestock projects, as well as academic and agricultural accomplishments. High school Seniors and College students in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of higher education complete their written application and go through an interview process.
